The Eternal Engine is a device created by the Ancients that uses the power of the Shadow to operate, and can seemingly generate limitless amounts of power. Eternal Engines can be seen many times throughout the Blue Dragon games, but don't play much of a role in the anime. Eternal engines were used to power things like airships and mecha robos, some even used as weapons, as demonstrated by Jibral, when they destroyed the Tsunami Vortex and Nene during the battle in the Primitive Cube during the events of Blue Dragon. After Nene was killed at the hands of Zola and Killer Bat, Deathroy assumed control of Szabo, merging with him and the ruined eternal engine that Nene used to form Destroy, the creature that caused the downfall of the ancient Magic Civilization. Later on, it can be seen that Raging Kesu tears out Szabo's eternal engine forcing him to become a villain once more, but later on Shu finds another in the Royal Tomb, and rejoins Shu's party.
