Blue Dragon Wiki

Turbulent Mai (波乱のマイ Haran no Mai) is one of the Mighty Quartet; General Szabo's subordinates, in the Blue Dragon series.

Turbulent Mai is a red, grey and yellow floating Mecha Robo. He has a red hooded style head and a yellow face with an orange mouth. His eyes are red and he has a black indent with a red circle at the centre on his forehead which may be an eye. His body is quite large, the bottom half of his torso is a darker red with a brown belt over it. The Gran Kingdom symbol is above it, on his chest. The bottom half of his body floats like his comrades and Szabo. Its grey with oval shaped extrusions and a yellow tip at the bottom. His arms are grey and thin with big spheres at his joints. His lower arms are red with grey hands and yellow jointed fingers. Around his middle is a silver cog and atop his head is a thinner version with less extrusions. He holds two curved swords with golden handles in this form.

Grand Turbulent Mai has an altered appearance like the rest of the quartet. The gears that surround him now have swords emerging from them. He now has black shoulder pads and arm guards and wields bigger swords.

Blue Dragon[]

Turbulent Mai is awoken by Szabo when the party attacks the flying fortress. He is the second Mecha Robo fought. Even though the party defeats him, he reappears with his comrades later on as Grand Turbulent Mai and fights alongside them instead of one by one. His last appearance is in the Primitive Cube where he forms Ultimate Szabo with the other Mecha Robo. He forms the right arm of the machine.

Blue Dragon Plus[]

Turbulent Mai reappears in Blue Dragon Plus alongside the rest of the quartet. Their goal is to remove Szabo's Eternal Engine to make him evil again and return to their side. Turbulent Mai only appears as Grand Turbulent Mai in this game however he retains his usual name in dialogue in the Monster Book.

Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow[]

Turbulent Mai and the quartet's role in Awakened Shadow is similar to Plus where they want Szabo to join their side again. In this game, they are capable of making weaker clones of themselves (that are blue coloured instead of red) that act as minor enemies in their stage. They tell him how they despise the idea of a peaceful world and want to cause chaos with Destroy. Despite Szabo's pleas for them to join him, the quartet fuse with Destroy. Once defeated, they disappear and Szabo mourns them.

In the anime, Szabo sends the quartet to attack Jiro and Minotaur. They fuse into Ultimate Szabo in the anime too however their combination is different. Turbulent Mai is the bottom of the robot in this version of the form.

  • Regular Attack: slashes twice at one party member
  • Turbulence: breaks the party's formation
  • Spinning Slash: deals multiple hits of damage on one party member
  • Anticipate: increases agility (higher chance to dodge attacks)
  • Vicissitudes

  • "Heh heh heh... So you're the ones that Szabo the master spoke of! I'm Turbulent Mai, as wild as the wind! And thanks to you, I'm free again! As a token of my gratitude... I'll show you some real fear!" (first appearance, Blue Dragon)

  • He may be inspired by the Japanese figure Benkei, a man who had gathered 99 swords and was looking for his 100th. His use of many swords and hood design (which is often attributed to the character) are similar
  • His Japanese name Haran no Mai translates to Chaotic Mai
  • Grand Turbulent Mai's concept art shows him wielding Naginatas instead of swords however in-game he simply uses thicker swords (retaining the design of the Naginata blades)
